Nine Deaths Linked to Breast Implants

The agency first identified a possible link between the implants and anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL), a rare type of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, in 2011. The cancer is more likely to occur with breast implants with textured surfaces, as opposed to implants with smooth surfaces. As of Feb. 1, the FDA had received 359 reports possible cancer cases associated with breast implants, according to a report by CNN. ALCL is highly treatable when detected early. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the Plastic Surgeon Foundation, about 10 million to 11 million women worldwide have breast implants. One study estimated an incidence rate of about 1 in 300,000 for breast implant-associated ALCL.
